【馬克吐溫懂中文嗎？】
馬克吐溫有時候喜歡揶揄他的母親，有一次他寄了一封仔細密封好的信給他母親，信封上並且註明著：「私人的、機密的」。
他的母親收到信後，甚至拒絕有人在場時打開這封信，於是她很興奮地回到自己的房間，幾分鐘後她走下樓來，眼神中露出幾分憤慨的情緒，原來馬克吐溫的這封信是用中文寫的。


【多妻制辯論】
有一次馬克吐溫與一位摩門教教徒辯論有關「多妻制」這個主題，馬克吐溫受到挑戰，他被要求說出聖經中曾有任何的一段文字是指責多妻制。馬克吐溫引述說：『沒有人能夠服侍兩位主人。』
Mark Twain got into an argument with a Mormon on the subject of polygamy, and was challenged to cite a single passage of Scripture condemning polygamy. "No man can serve two masters," quoted Mark Twain.
